EDUCATING FOR THE FUTURE
The learning journey at St Patrick's honours the developmental stages in a student’s life. Based on leading educational research and the best of today’s technologies, we prepare students for the future by teaching them how to think critically and creatively, how to communicate effectively and how to lead and work both independently and collaboratively.
EDUCATING FOR THE FUTURE
THE KEY LEARNING AREAS
We follow the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) approved curriculum in the key learning areas of:
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
As a Catholic school we also have a strong religious dimension that runs through all the KLAs and is also formally recognised as the KLA of Religious Education.
St Patrick's students take part in formal Religious Education every day, based on the new Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese curriculum, Encountering Jesus. This curriculum invites all students to consider how the teachings of Jesus Christ can apply to their lives.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
At St Patrick's we recognise the importance of educating the whole child.
We have specialist teaching in Music, Visual Arts and PE. Our students have the opportunity to explore their creativity, develop their talents and discover new skills. Our expert staff help bring out the best in every child.
A St Patrick's education offers so much more than just the basics.
As the building blocks for all learning, we have a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy throughout our learning and teaching programs.
LITERACY
Language is central to students’ intellectual, social, and emotional development and has an essential role in all key learning areas.
For this reason, we believe at St Patrick’s that all students should experience a balanced and coherent program of literacy instruction daily. Every child, every day participates in 100 minutes of reading and writing instruction, with the goal that every student becomes a literate lifelong learner.
We provide an early literacy intervention program, Reading Recovery, for first graders who need greater assistance in learning to read and write. It is a daily, individualised intervention delivered by a specialist teacher who engages children in reading books and writing their own stories.
Our R3 intervention program is for students in the higher grades, who experience difficulty comprehending what they read. The purpose of R3 is to provide these students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to successfully comprehend age-appropriate quality texts.
NUMERACY
At St Patrick’s, we believe that Mathematics is an essential life skill that helps us make sense of the world. All students at St Patrick's engage in Mathematics for 60 minutes each day made up of:
- A number warm up
- Rich and open-ended task
- Students representing number concepts through the relationships of the Number Triad - word, symbol and collection
- Students working in flexible groups and structures Students articulating and reflecting on their thinking and strategies.
Our aim is to develop the competence and confidence of all students in learning and using Mathematics. We support this through Extending Mathematical Understanding (EMU). EMU is a research-based intervention program that provides small group teaching for children who need greater assistance in understanding mathematics.
